Autumn school on methods in neuroinformatics
Autumn School on Methods in Neuroinformatics
Course decription
The School is a three-session hands-on course for graduate students. Rather than giving a broad overview of neuroinformatics, the course will introduce the participants to key methodologies of the field and give them the opportunity to experiment with different approaches to tangle the same question. Each session will start with a lecture and will be followed by computerized hands-on exercises. The three sessions vary from imaging, image data analysis and models based on the analysis, i.e., from imaging to models.
The lecturers are:
Imaging: Professor Jack van Horn (LONI, University of California LA, USA)
Data analysis: Dr. Christian F. Beckmann (Department of Clinical Neurology, University of Oxford)
Modeling: Dr. Sean Hill (the Blue Brain Project)
Target group
Neuroscience graduate students and postdocs who need to strengthen their knowledge on the related subjects. The course is also suitable for beginners.
Useful background knowledge
Basic knowledge with imaging, analysis and/or modeling will help, but is not necessary. Thus, also beginners can attend in order to gain more insight on the field.
Costs
No registration fee. Housing and travel must be taken care of by the student. Financial aid for EU students is available (masters and PhD) for travel costs.
Stipend possibilities
EU INCF funding is available for students inside EU who preferably also attend the INCF World Congress. The emphasis on the traveling grants is put to applicants from the new EU countries. To apply for the funding the applicant should indicate so in the CV or Autumn School application and preferably present estimated traveling costs, e.g. flight, Congress registration and accommodation.
Accommodation
Same hotel as congress or open to students' choice. Pilsen Parkhotel first class category available at CZK 1000 (EUR 40)/person and night, in double and triple rooms: includes breakfast, VAT, city fees, parking place, and fitness.
Registration
Registration is open until September 1st. Quorum is limited to a maximum of 20 students. Registration and inquiries: Antti Pettinen, neuroinformatics@cs.tut.fi
Lecture format
Each session will start with a lecture (1 hour) and will be followed by computerized hands-on exercises on the subject of the lecture. There will be one session on each topic of the Autumn School, i.e., one on imaging, one on image data analysis, and finally, one on modeling based on data analysis. The school will be held in English. Required computers, software and data will be provided.
Location
Pilsen, Czech Republic. The exact venue is at the University of Pilsen, lecture room UU409. For a map and instructions on how to get from the congress place (Parkhotel) to the university, see here (on the map, the exact location is right at the point of the university mark, on the fourth floor of the grey building).
